Diniwilk Stew

  • I am CRAZY BUSY at work right now, hence my lack of January non-beauty favorites and February goals.  I will post them for completeness of the record, just not in any sort of timely fashion.  I have a legal-ish sort of job in the utility industry (I'm a business analyst lawyer-helper, but not a lawyer), and there are a bunch of cases coming up this spring, plus a boatload of settlement meetings which means lots of trips back and forth to Columbus.  I LOVE this part of my job, but it doesn't really leave room for much else.
  • I have mentioned that I'm on a makeup no buy due to Project 10 Pan, which I have been doing decent at but there were a couple of slips.  I tracked my expenses for the first time ever in January (I am a failure as an adult) and I was appalled.  Now I'm on a super strict life no buy in February.  At least I have company!
  • One area that I really need to work on is my impulse itunes purchasing.  I knew I was spending a lot on books, but not how much.  Then this weekend I was playing Tap Zoo and blew through over $20 before I even remembered my no buy.  UGH.  But all I can do is keep trying harder and hope that I'll get to where I want to be sooner rather than later.  Also...if you have a Tap Zoo and want to friend my real life facebook account so we can be neighbors, let me know!
  • I am not doing so hot in Biggest Blogging Loser.  I thought that if I were to step up my exercising and just make healthier decisions in general the pounds would melt off.  I am like ONE pound lighter than when this thing started.  I am going to try to cut out as much fast food as possible this month to see if that helps both financially and fatassially.
  • Adriana is FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY pooping in the potty after over a year of requesting a diaper to poop in.  Turns out it only took a week of me being a super hardass about it (and my enabling parents to get out of town).  She went like 3 days asking to go to the potty every 10 seconds and screaming and crying and not pooping, then she finally couldn't hold out anymore.  She pooped at daycare, which was not ideal because APPARENTLY it's against the law to wipe them after a certain age?  Does that sound like BS?  That's what the director told me when I complained that she had poop all up her little girl parts and was all red and disgusting.  So Adriana went through a butt wiping 101 crash course and now she's finally a legit big girl (she has been fully night trained since she was 2, not sure why pooping was such a big deal).
  • What is the deal with 2 kid families where one is doing awesome so the other one takes it upon themselves to make life hell?  Lucy has stopped sleeping all night.  I don't know if it's the 18 month growth spurt, more teeth coming in, or what, but she has been throwing middle of the night full out temper tantrums.  The crazy thing is that if I give her a specific binky, she calms down.  If I give her any other binky, she throws it at me and freaks out even more.  So...she just randomly got really attached to one particular binky after not really caring much about them for a year and a half, and will cut a bitch if she wakes up and doesn't have it?  Last night I put the smack down and refused to go in there, so she cried for like 20 minutes and then chilled out.  I was a little worried she wasn't ever going to calm down, because she is becoming a world champion fit thrower.  Hopefully if I continue the hardass approach that worked with Adriana and Lucia will get over it.
  • No, I'm not getting the Julep Cupid Mystery box (see above re: no buy).  But if you do, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE lemme know what you got!

Enabler Alerts!

There are so many crazy deals going on right now I thought you might not mind if I were to be the enabler that I am and give you the heads up.  I learned all of this info from various makeuptalk boards.

[EDIT - MAKEUPTALK POSTED ABOUT THIS CODE A FEW DAYS AGO BUT APPARENTLY BB SHUT IT OFF IN FEB.  I WOULDN'T HAVE POSTED THIS IF I KNEW THAT.  BUT I AM LEAVING IT UP TO TALK ABOUT BB POINTS AND TELL YOU ABOUT THE OTHER DEALS.  SORRY!!!!!] Are you a monthly Birchbox subscriber?  Right now you can use the code join110annual when you upgrade to the annual subscription and get 110 points plus ANOTHER 110.  Makeuptalk user Kyuu (love her) pointed out that if you review the products each month for 50 points, that works out to 820 points, or $80.  Assuming you use the points on full sized products you would buy anyway, that's like paying $30 for 12 Birchboxes, or $2.50 a box.  Makes it a lot easier to swallow a crappy box, huh?

I recently used my points that were about to expire (they are good for a year) and got the Eyeko liner, the Anastasia brow pen, and the Spornette teasing brush for free.  If you are not taking advantage of BB's points program, you are missing out!  DO NOT LET ANOTHER MONTH GO BY WITHOUT GETTING YOUR 50 POINTS!

Nastassja Skin is giving away a bunch of free samples if you just pay shipping.  I would totally get the Nastassja Collection Set for just $9 if I were spending money right now.

If you register on the Missha website, they will give you a code for a free full size BB Cream in shade 21.  You just have to spend $1 and pay for shipping, so you end up paying like $11 for a BB cream and an eyeshadow.  I did this in January, and then got really mad at myself for breaking my no buy, hence the uber short rules in February.

The Balm is on Hautelook right now.  Using every last bit of willpower to not buy Meet Matte Nude and Mary Loumanizer.

I have already mentioned the tarte TSV and the awesome New Beauty test tube, but it's worth repeating.

Do you want to know about deals like this in the future?  Or do you not care?

January 2013 Beauty Favorites

I have always thought it would be fun to do a monthly favorites featuring the best of beauty, fashion, food, home, and entertainment, but was always too lazy to go through with it.  I have been on a bit of a blogging tear lately, and my OCD side likes starting in January instead of the middle of the year.  I was going to do all of the favorites in one post but it was getting REALLY long so I'm splitting it into beauty and non-beauty.

  • Frownies Eye Gels ($23): I got these in my December Birchbox and I just love them.  It is very rare that I actually buy something from BB, but I knew the second I put these one that I needed more.  They feel so cool and refreshing, it's the perfect way to get that spa day feeling right on your couch.  Honestly, that is why I love them; I can't really say whether or not they are actually DOING anything other than making me feel pampered.  Each one is good for 3-5 uses, but you can definitely stretch that out if you store them properly and make sure you always wash your face first.  After use, I spray them with my Melvita Rose Water from the June Birchbox and then pop them in the fridge - so glad I finally found a use for it!  These seem like a splurge at $23 for 3 sets, but it works out to a dollar a use for me.  I'd definitely pay that for this experience!  Some day when my no buy is over I want to try out these frownies patches for the giant divot between my eyebrows.   Oh, the joys of having an aging bitchface!
  • Kiehl's Dark Spot Corrector ($50) and Rosa Arctica Eye Cream ($46): I already talked about the corrector at length over here, but this was really a standout product for me this month.  You see that trio of old acne spots on my chin in the pic above?  Gone.  I wasn't sure how I felt about the eye cream at first other than "it's nice...", but today I looked at myself in the mirror and was astonished to see that my undereye area was really plump and my fine lines are definitely less noticeable.  So my first ever eye cream earned a mention too.

  • Nailtini Nail Polish in Frappe ($11): Best nude ever.  I painted my nails this color like 3 times already, which NEVER happens in a single month.  Full review here.
  • Tarte Journey to Natural Beauty Set ($60): I talked about buying this set over here...Now that I've had it for a couple of weeks, I have really fallen in love with every last product (except the self tanner, they aren't my thing).  Tarte is definitely one of my top three makeup brands (the other two are Urban Decay and benefit), and I just love getting it through the QVC deals or in my Test Tubes.
    • The foundation is amazing, creamy and gorgeous.
    • This was my first amazonian clay blush (shade: fearless), and now I see what everyone is raving about.  It stays all day!  I was SO SAD when I saw that the original New Beauty Test Tube (the one I cancelled) had a full size tarte blush (and a million other amazing products) in it this quarter, so hubs is getting it for me for Valentine's day (woohoo!!!)
    • The brow pencil is a great 3-in-1 product (there is a pencil, spoolie, and concealer/highlighter) so it's perfect for travel or to stick in my purse.
    • I am not normally a lipstick person, but this amazonian butter lipstick (shade: plummy rose) is AWESOME - it really does go on like butter, and it's a very flattering shade.  It also has that same awesome minty smell as the lipsurgence balm stains.
    • The brush is thicker than what I'm used to, but I like it.  It's a lot sturdier than the crappy brush that came in my What Has Your Makeup Done For You Lately tarte set.
    • Lights, Camera, Flashes isn't as good as tarte's Gifted, but it's still better than 98% of the other mascaras out there.
  • Julep Big Red Bow Set: I received my Big Red Bow set this month, thanks to you guys. I know I was annoying about asking you guys to enter and mention me (I was so obsessed!), but winning the contest really helped boost my spirits when I was low.  So THANK YOU.  For real.  And I will try to be less annoying in the future.  I'll be honest - I have mostly just sat there petting the box saying "my precious...my precious".  However, there are three products currently in heavy rotation from this set: Reveal, the Essential Cuticle Oil, and the crystal nail file.

    • Reveal ($38)(holy shitballs, I didn't know it was so expensive)(please do not spend that much money on this) is a nail growth serum.  Jury's still out as to whether or not it works, but I'm enjoying the routine.  I like feeling like I am actually being proactive about my paper thin nails instead of just complaining about it.
    • I LOVE the Essential Cuticle Oil ($18).  It smells fantastic - I can smell the lavender and almond oils and something I can't quite put my finger on.  It has a roller ball applicator, which prevents me from slopping oil all over the place.  It absorbs nicely and DEFINITELY makes my gross nail beds look better.  The only downside is that I really do have to use it consistently (I usually do it twice a day) or I almost feel like my nails are worse than when I do nothing - peeling skin everywhere.  But it might just be that I forgot what life before cuticle oil was like.
    • Where have you been all my life, Crystal Nail File ($6)?  Never going back to the cheapos again.
  • Jouer Lip Enhancer / Conditioning Lip Treatment ($14): This is really just an honorable mention, since I used my sample from the October Birchbox for three days and was TOTALLY LOVING IT, so of course I forgot to take it out of my pocket before throwing it in the washer.  I don't really think of it as an enhancer (no plumping effects), but it had a great scent, texture, and color, and my lips felt very nourished.  I won't have to pay for another lip product until approximately 2020, but this one is on my list if I ever run out.
More non-beauty favorites to come later.

What products did you love in January?
