An Anniversary of Sorts

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of one of the hardest days of my life.  I am pleased to report that other than an acknowledgement of the date and Justin cooking us dinner (which he rarely does), it went by pretty uneventfully.  It is amazing to me how we are so resilient - life can be pretty fucked up sometimes, but we keep going and eventually it gets better.  I'm not going to say everything is perfect, but it's pretty darn good.  It's so normal it's probably weird.

I just want to say thank you for all of you who have been there for me, whether you knew the details of what was going on or just that I was having a tough time.  I have a list of names here but I'm scared to leave anyone out, so I will just tell you that every last comment or email or text or hug meant the world to me and got me through many many many crappy days.

In addition to my words and a group internet hug, I wanted to do something nice for you guys.  And what is nicer than the gift of makeup?  I will send one of you ladies the Urban Decay Naked Basics eyeshadow palette.  And if that's not your thing, you can have a $25 Target or Starbucks gift card.  That should cover most of you, right?  I'll pick a winner one week from today and send it when I send it (I am horribly slow at mailing things, I'm sorry).

And if you are a reader or twitter follower but have no idea what I'm talking about?  That's okay, I appreciate you too.  Don't feel weird about entering.  We are all friends here.

I don't just want to see your prize of choice in the comments below - tell me something random about yourself or a cute kid story or recommend a book or a product.  Any fun distraction from my day is welcome.

I love you guys!

UPDATE:

Congrats, @mommydaisy!!!

Well, of COURSE I'm going to enter for that palette. Of course. :)

Otherwise, I can say that I wasn't around here last year this time but I'm so glad to know you now and in one short month we will be roomies playing with make up and having lovely drinks together and that makes everything worthwhile. Love to you!

I don't know what happened last year, but I'm glad you're doing well!

I found you through TJ and use you both to help fill my makeup case, so I'd love the UD Naked Basics, of course. I just paid my credit card bill last night and was a little embarrased at the Hautelook after Ulta after Birchbox... And I just placed a Sephora order yesterday! I think I also need to follow in your & TJ's footsteps wtih a no-buy month, or quarter probably!

I just won a raffle for something I had no interest in, so I probably don't have a very good shot at that eyeshadow, but I will still tell you that Anna has a stuffed penguin that apparently changes gender frequently and is either named (approximately) Clairink (girl) or Aye Aye (boy).

I'm happy that things are looking so much brighter for you a year later. It really is amazing how resilient we are. Things we thought would break us end up just leaving a little (or big) scar that continues to fade, day by day.

My favorite product right now is Josie Maran Argan Oil Daily Face Moisturizer SPF40+. It was one of the sunblocks in the Sephora Sun Kit and I loved it, so I bought the big bottle. It's a good sunblock that doesn't feel like sunblock, plus it makes my skin soft. If my skin is feeling especially dry, I'll add a drop of argan oil, but most days it's moisturizing enough by itself.

You'll have to decide for me about the palette. I have the Naked 2 palette; are they very similar? If yes, then Target would be my choice. I love Starbucks, but my kids always whine for me to buy them something.

I am SO glad you guys are in a good place this year. I hope it keeps getting better and better:)

Look, I'm never going to say no to makeup, but I also wanted to tell you how glad I am you guys are in a better place, and how impressively you handled yourself during all of this.

YAY! There is nothing quite like the feeling that things are on a better path. And knowing you will be stronger for it. Perspective and hindsight are great things, aren't they?

So here is a story I think you will appreciate. My three year old just hit that repeat stage. The other day she dropped something and said "Well, sh*t. Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t". We try not to swear around her, so I'm not exactly sure where this came from and I'm not 100% sure she actually said this, but it certainly sounded like it! We tried not to react but it was so hard!

Glad you are having a much, much better September 2013 versus 2012.

I am currently on a concealor quest, which I think would appeal to your make-up love. I have used Mac and Bare Minerals and various drugstore versions (Neutragena comes to mind) but nothing is good. I have a natural did-you-get-punched-in-the-eye? type undereye look and when I get sleep deprived it all gets so fugs. I have heard good things about Amazing concealor so I guess I need to go to Sephora and try it out. Do you have any hot tips for me, oh wise one?

HI FRIEND! Glad you made it through yesterday okay! Things are just going to keep getting better and better from here on out. I'm sure of it! :)

I don't really know what to do with eyeshadows (can we still be friends?) so I think I'd choose the Target GC.

Have you read the Kathleen Turner series by Tiffany Snow? Not very well known, and definitely not believable with all of their coincidences, but such good reads!

I'm so glad you're back to weirdly normal. I also can't believe it's been a year, that seems like a super long time. For me. It probably feels like a lifetime has gone by for you.

I cannot recommend a book because my taste is so, so terrible I'd be embarrassed to say it out loud and I am incapable of wearing eye makeup correctly but here is a funny story: I am out of face wash so I was talking to myself as a reminder to buy more face wash when Caroline said "You need new face Mommy?" and I say "No, I just need to wash the face I have." She said "You face is old. We'll go to Target." So. That was good for my ego.

I love your beauty subscription reviews. Mmm, living vicariously. Book recommendation? If you're looking for funny and light, I'm rereading Mindy Kaling's book now and greatly enjoying it.

I'm so glad that things are better this time this year than last year! :) Cute kid story... hmm... I found Miss L chewing on a battery yesterday. Is that cute? I about had a heart attack at the time.

Cute kid story: Over the weekend, I got to meet my boyfriend's 2-year-old nephew. He was a little shy at first, but we spent the whole long weekend with him, so by the end he was totally warmed up to my new-ness. One day, klutz that I am, I ran into a wicker chair on our deck and gave myself a nasty cut on my leg. I was playing with him and noticed he had a scab on his leg, too. I said, hey we have matching boo boos. And he gave my boo boo a kiss to make it feel better! It was so precious.

I am so happy things are going better. And I can't wait to see you in one month! And I have not read The Ocean At the End of the Lane but I will put it on my list and then we shall discuss.

SO glad to hear that things are going so well! I remember reading your story initially and feeling so sick to my stomach. You are a strong and resilient woman. You should be proud of yourself for how you handled everything. I know I wouldn't have been able to exhibit the same kind of grace you mustered up during the whole thing. I hope things continue to progress in such a positive manner for you and the fam!

Jackson has started saying faster only he has issues with his f's apparently and replaces them with b's. It took us a while to figure out what he was trying to say because we knew that wasn't a word that was said a lot in our house. I joked that he must have been hanging out with my co-worker who frequently uses bastard to refer to people who annoy her.

Naked Basics has been on my list for a while now so I would totally love that.

I don't know about the hard times but I am glad they are through. I would like to enter the giveaway too!

Man, it seems like that was more than a year ago. I'm so glad you guys made it through!

Random child story, though not my child: Last week my five year old sister told my mother that she knows she's my mother's "best girl", but don't worry cuz she won't tell me that. Ohhhh boy...lol.

Congratulations on getting through this year! It's so nice to see you do it in your standard resilient fashion.

As far as the giveaway goes...I'd definitely want the Target gift card. I am apparently the LAST person in the US to discover that Target now carries Boots...I basically covet everything in the No.7 line. I picked up an eye cream from the Expert line and I have been loving it SO MUCH...it just feels so good. I also totally believe it's working as my undereyes look less...purple...in the morning. LOL!

I didn't know you well a year ago, but I'm glad you're in a better place now than you were then.

Let's see, book recommendations. I just read Fire by Kristin Cashore, and I really enjoyed it. Product recommendations...can I just say everything from theBalm? Is that just taking the easy way out? Fine, I'll pick something more specific, uh...the Balm Jovi & Shady Lady palettes from theBalm are my current favs.

Hugs, Laura! I'm so happy to read that you are in a much better place than just a year ago.

Sooo, I'm about to leave work to go try out the agave hair straightening treatment. I've never done any of these types of treatments but I am SO EXCITED at the prospect of (almost) wash and go hair!! GAH!

Laura I am so thrilled for you guys and how far you've come over the last year. I told you this before, but there is no way I could have ever been as strong as you were. You are kind of my hero.

I admire you so much, and am in awe of your strength and hard work! (Also, don't enter me into the drawing, okay? Okay.)

Hi Laura! I wasn't around this time last year, I must have been just after. Hopefully everything is okay, and you are doing well. I would love the Naked Basics palette (: But you shouldn't focus on that right now, just being with your family. <3 Hope you have a pleasant relaxing weekend.

Wow! So happy that things are better than last year. You, my dear, are one of the strongest women I know!

I know I don't comment enough, but I do read occasionally & chat on Twitter from time to time. Who could say no to eye shadow, though?!!

Random tidbit: I have baby fever. Two friends have had new little squishy babies in the last two weeks! Is is totally crazy to have baby fever when I have a baby in the house? He's only 5 months old & I'm ready for another.

P.S. Just wanted to be sure you know who this is. @mommydaisy

I'm so glad you are still here a year later and things have gotten better. Wish I was going to the Blathering so I could hug you in person. (Maybe next year, since I'll be going then! :)
